After all of that driving and a nearly sleepless night once we made our destination (because someone smallish decided he needed to sleep smashed in between Troy and I and tossed and thrashed about all night long), we knew that we needed something extra tasty to wake us up.
Now, extra tasty in my book is something decidedly not healthy for you and when you're in New Orleans, that usually and especially means something fried and if it's for breakfast, that means fried AND liberally covered with powdered sugar.
Beignets, it's what's for breakfast. :-)
We weren't quite ready to head to the French Quarter so we ate at the Cafe Du Monde on Veteran's Boulevard which was the location we always went to when we lived there and were craving some beignets.
However, if you've never been to New Orleans and you decide to visit, you must do the ultra-touristy thing and have your beignets at the French Market downtown across from the French Quarter.
Trust me, there's just something about eating them in a covered cafe with walls open to the air and the sidewalks; wonderful on a dreary rainy day where you can smell the moist earth but be protected and cozy with a mug of hot cocoa {or chilled chocolate milk in the humid days of summer} and watch the people go by and the birds flit through the trees.
Just remember to bring cash because they don't accept credit or debit cards {which we had totally forgotten this go around; oops}.

She had no idea that she was in for a tasty treat...
Feast your eyes upon that! Fried doughy pillows of sugary goodness. Scrumptious {and messy!}.
The instant Troy set the tray on the table, Chloe lunged and I mean LUNGED for the beignets.
And she almost got them with the very tip of her little fingers. Thankfully, I was able to avert near certain disaster and save them from the adorable clutches of Troy's doppelganger.
Peyton knew what these were... and it didn't take long for him to dig right in!
See what I mean about messy? It is inevitable; you will leave with sugar on your face, your clothes and your hands no matter how carefully {or not} you eat them. Check out Peyton's shirt! :-)
Troy told me not to add this picture because when I took it, he was in the middle of a bite. I still think he's cute, even when he's eating and covered in sugar. Maybe especially because he's covered in sugar... be still my sweet tooth!
New Orleans tested, girl approved!
If you go visit the big N.O., try a few beignets. You'll love them.
Unless you hate sugar.
Then you might not like them. At all.
But that's just weird.
Who doesn't like sugar? :-)
